The Panthers announced today that they have placed quarterback Taylor Heinicke on injured reserve and have signed free agent quarterback Garrett Gilbert to take his spot on the 53-man roster.

Heinicke injured his left (non-throwing) elbow in last Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons, but he came back into the game after being checked out by the training staff. He finished the game completing 33/53 for 274 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions.
Third string quarterback Kyle Allen, who filled in for Heinicke when he was being treated for his injury, is the most likely candidate to start Sunday.
Panthers will start their third quarterback in as many weeks at New Orleans on Sunday. Almost certainly Kyle Allen.

Allen went 4/4 for 38 yards in his brief stint under center last Sunday. If he does get the call it would be his first career NFL start. Gilbert would also make his first career start as he has never appeared in an NFL regular season game since being drafted by the Rams in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.
