Garrett Gilbert excited for chance to re-join Panthers

On Christmas Eve in 2017, quarterback Garrett Gilbert was with the Carolina Panthers as they earned a dramatic victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that locked them into the playoffs. On Christmas Eve this past Monday, the Panthers provided Gilbert with yet another good memory: An opportunity to re-join the team.

After failing to make the Panthers’ roster at the end of the preseason, Gilbert was summoned back to the Carolinas by virtue of a phone call on Christmas Eve, and signed with the team on Wednesday. Gilbert will serve as the backup to Kyle Allen in Week 17, as backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke was placed on Injured Reserve due to an elbow injury suffered in Week 16.

Speaking with the media on Wednesday, Gilbert expressed his excitement for the opportunity to re-join the Panthers’ locker room, where he had spent much of the 2017 season as the third-string backup quarterback behind Cam Newton and Derek Anderson.

It’s always really exciting to get the chance to play again and also to see all these guys who were my teammates for over a year,” said Gilbert in a report by Jelani Scott of the Panthers. “It’s great to be back in the locker room.”

Gilbert’s familiarity with the Panthers made him a natural fit to re-join the team. Throughout the offseason and into the preseason, Gilbert had competed for the backup quarterback job behind Newton, making him comfortable with the fundamentals of Norv Turner‘s offensive system. In preseason competition, Gilbert had completed 19 of 33 passes for 185 yards and two touchdowns – Respectable numbers, but ones that ultimately weren’t enough to earn the backup job over Heinicke.

Since being let go by the Panthers, Gilbert had spent the 2018 season out of the league – Though he did get an opportunity to continue his professional football career when he was drafted by the Orlando Apollos of the Alliance of American Football. But now, Gilbert gets to close out another NFL season back on a roster. And the Panthers are glad to have hm back in the fold.

“We’re fortunate we were able to get a guy like Garrett to come back in,” said head coach Ron Rivera. “Solid football player, smart guy, was in our system for almost two full seasons. It’s good to have him back and have him part of what we’re trying to do.”

When the Panthers take to the field in Week 17, Gilbert will most likely be active for the very first time in his NFL career. A former sixth-round draft pick by the St. Louis Rams in 2014, Gilbert has bounced around the NFL, spending time with other teams before joining the Panthers in 2017. Gilbert was a member of the active roster for 10 games, but was always a healthy scratch on gamedays.
