Breaking down the chances of each pending Panthers free agent’s return

The Carolina Panthers have a lot to do before the 2019 NFL draft on April 27th. As of Monday, the team’s roster sits at 66 players (out of a possible 90), after the Panthers elected to sign 13 players to future/reserve contracts. The team also has an unusually large amount of free agents. Their 34 players are the second-most in the league and not all of them will be returning. Here is a breakdown of their chances to return.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

C Ryan Kalil (retiring), S Mike Adams, WR Devin Funchess, RB Fozzy Whittaker, K Chandler Catanzaro, LB David Mayo, RB Cameron Artis-Payne

Ryan Kalil has opted to ride off into the sunset after an illustrious 11-year career. Mike Adams will be 38 by the beginning of next year, and was showing his age by the end of the season. Devin Funchess was all but eliminated by the end of the year, being inactive in the final game. Fozzy Whittaker will be 30 and coming off an ACL tear and can be replaced by Kenjon Barner or another younger running back.

Chandler Catanzaro will vie for a kicking spot on another team. David Mayo will be the next A.J. Klein, where he will likely push for a starting spot on another team’s roster. He will likely be replaced by the next special teams/rising linebacker, such as Andre Smith or Jermaine Carter. Cameron Artis-Payne will attempt to get an honest look somewhere else.
