2019 NFL Draft: Carolina Panthers add to secondary in Dan Kadar’s latest mock

The Panthers ended the season on a positive note after beating the Saints 33-14 in the season finale yesterday (or negative note if you wanted them to lose) and ended up with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Dan Kadar of SB Nation’s Mocking the Draft has put out his first mock draft since the first 20 picks of the draft were officially set, and he has the Panthers adding a quality player to their defense. No, it’s not the elite pass rusher that most fans crave, but it’s a player at another position of desperate need.

16. Carolina Panthers: Deionte Thompson, S, Alabama

By winning on Sunday, the Panthers went from drafting in the top 10 all the way down to No. 16. Still, starter talent will be available in the teens for the Panthers. Picking here is actually advantageous for Carolina. Thompson fills arguably the team’s biggest need other than pass rusher and he’s easily the best safety in the draft.

WalterFootball ranks Thompson as the No. 1 safety in this year’s draft class:

Deionte Thompson*, S, Alabama
Height: 6’2” Weight: 196 lbs
Projected 40 Time: 4.46
Projected Round (2019): 1

12/8/18: Thompson has been one of college football’s breakout players in 2018, and multiple pro team sources are raving about him. They say that a first-round buzz is building around Thompson. In 2018, he has two interceptions, five passes broken up, three forced fumbles and 71 tackles. Thompson has displayed great range to cover a lot of ground in the deep part of the field and quality instincts. With his size, speed, and instincts, Thompson could be a free safety. A true single high safety to lock down the deep part of the field is a rare commodity to find, and Thompson could be that as a pro.

Thompson was a backup to Minkah Fitzpatrick and Ronnie Harrison as a junior. Over limited playing time last season, Thompson recorded 27 tackles, four passes broken up and two interceptions. The 6-foot-2, 196-pounder has a big-time skill set and could be a fast riser during the 2019 NFL Draft process.

I think the part of WF’s analysis that I like the most is the part where he says “with his size, speed and instincts, Thompson could be a free safety”. That sounds exactly like something the Panthers desperately need in their secondary. If they decide to re-sign Eric Reid to a multi-year deal and add Thompson to the mix, the Panthers will finally have a competent duo at safety to take some pressure off the rest of the defense.
